He apparently was a father to both Rupert and Gerald. He taught them everything he knew and treated them as sons. This is why upon his death Gerald and Rupert sought revenge on the demon Regnier the one who killed Hugh. However none ever got revenge and Rupert was killed by Regnier and Gerald never got a chance seeing as Regnier soon went into the dark dimension and only escape years later(The dark dimension makes you age less quicker and elsewhere 100s of years may have passed and only a few in the dark dimension),in that time Gerald died of old age.
